We've Got The Jazz! Vol. 13 - A Tribute To Nas' Illmatic
We’ve Got The Jazz! returns for Vol. 13 with Apo Fapojuwo, David Lavoie and Jeff Gammon digging into Nas’ landmark debut album, Illmatic.
Released in 1994, Illmatic is widely considered one of hip-hop’s defining records. Nas’ writing gets much of the attention, but the album’s sound is just as important. Producers including DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip and Large Professor built its tracks from jazz, soul and funk samples, creating a record that feels both raw and remarkably musical.
For this edition, Apo Fapojuwo on drums, David Lavoie on guitar and Jeff Gammon on bass will pull Illmatic apart and put it back together as a trio, exploring the samples, grooves and musical ideas behind the record.
