We've Got The Jazz! Vol. 9 - A Tribute to Madlib
We've Got The Jazz is a monthly series at ODB featuring local musician David Lavoie and a rotating lineup of Calgary's top jazz players. Each edition highlights an artist, album, or group shaped by jazz's rich history and lasting influence.
For Vol. 9, David Lavoie returns alongside Augustine Yates, Jon May, and Adam Pettigrew to perform music from Madlib's acclaimed 2003 album *Shades of Blue*.
Originally commissioned by Blue Note Records, *Shades of Blue* saw producer and DJ Madlib dig deep into the legendary jazz label's catalogue, reimagining classic recordings through sampling, remixing, and new arrangements. The result is an album that bridges jazz and hip-hop while paying tribute to artists such as Donald Byrd, Bobby Hutcherson, Ronnie Foster, and Weldon Irvine.
For this performance, the quartet will reinterpret selections from *Shades of Blue* through a live jazz lens, bringing together the groove, spontaneity, and spirit that made the record a modern classic.
We encourage guests to enjoy dinner and drinks throughout the evening. Reservation times are staggered around our musical sets to create an easy flow and relaxed experience. Smaller groups are seated for up to one and a half hours and larger groups for up to two hours. The band will perform 6:30pm and 8:00pm sets.
